Shaw Lodge Mills
The historic Shaw Lodge Mills, in the centre of Halifax, is a 27-acre site with 250,000 sq ft of space, with a further 20,000 sq ft coming online in 2024 & 2025.
HISTORY
This incredible Grade II listed former textile mill has a backstory entrenched in modern art and manufacturing, including as a workshop where train carriages were built in the earlier part of the 20th century. If ever a building could speak, this Halifax property would have wonderful tales to tell. From being a place where train carriages were built in their golden age to somewhere that inspired David Hockney.
Shaw Lodge Mills was built by John Holdsworth whose family were textile manufacturers and merchants specialising in worsted cloth, winning a medal at the 1851 Great Exhibition. As mechanised spinning became a reality, the family built mills, including Shaw Lodge in 1830. The first power loom weaving shed was launched here in 1844.
The original offices, available today, were designed by Sir Charles Barry, who designed the Houses of Parliament.
