HISTORY
J Moores and Sons dates back to 1862 when Samuel Moore started a hat business with his six sons.
From 1862, Moores Hats was located on Heaton Street, Denton, and under various guises, it expanded to fill almost the entire building. Its Owl hat brand became famous with the motto: ‘Smart wear for the wise.’
At its height in 1892, Moores Hats employed 1,100 people. However, the company steadily declined from the 1930s depression onwards. Moores Hats stopped trading in 1972.
Moores Hats were among 80 hatting companies in Denton. It was surprisingly dangerous work as the wool they worked with was often impregnated with mercury. The mercury caused tremors and attacked the central nervous system, and led to the expression ‘As mad as a hatter’.
