Bridgewater Mill
Bridgewater Mill in Eccles, near Salford Quays, is the perfect example of an old mill updated for life today. It’s 43,000 sq ft mill has office and workshop space.
HISTORY
The Bridgewater Canal, opened in 1761, is regarded as the first ‘true’ canal of the Industrial Revolution. Bridgewater Mill which sits alongside the canal, is a former bedding mill known as Beddingate Mill and was once home to more than 100 looms and 40,000 spindles. Part of the site was demolished in the late 1990s, but what remains is largely original.
BRIDGEWATER MILL TODAY
The Lowry Group bought Bridgewater Mill in 1997, and it was the first it owned. Its heritage also inspired the company name.
Times have changed, of course, over the years, and it’s now close to one of Greater Manchester’s most vibrant areas: Salford Quays. It’s an area known for its upmarket shops, restaurants, bars and theatres. It’s also very well served by tram, road and rail links.
Today, the mill is full of exciting companies, including Transcend Wellbeing Studio, Paul Anthony Furnishings and Eccles Boxing School.
